Abstract

Territories, habitats, economies: complex systems that co-evolve in interrelated synergies over long time scales. Traditions, customs and cultures emerge from this co-evolution. The present process of climate change, which takes place on time scales whose speed is unprecedented, induces sudden transformations in habitats and territories that have remained unchanged for centuries. As always, border areas are the first to experience the consequences of these changes in the most dramatic way.
