Abstract

Sicily is one of the areas of the Mediterranean Sea at most significant risk due to the effects of climate change. Average surface temperatures are expected to increase between 2.2 and 5.1°C for the period 2080-2100, and at the same time, summer rainfall is likely to fall from 10% to 30%, increasing the desertification potential by 70% of the island. This puts both the natural and human environment of the island at risk. And these risks are potentially underestimated because of the tendency to focus on only one or a few parameters at a time, not considering how the various risks increase each other.
