The contemporary project of the city /// Co-adaptive territories. Towards resilient heritage reuse

Keywords: built environment, place-making, urban studies, adaptive heritage reuse, social innovation, urban practice

Abstract

The essay interrogates the current state of urban planning. Taking its cue from the literature, it critically looks at possible ways of observing, studying, and tackling the city using spatial planning. To this end, the reflection reinterprets the notion of place, advancing an immersive way to navigate into the extant. By assuming the collective experience as a central element of the current city, places become the leading conceptual site of re-invention of planners' technical knowledge.

The paper reflects on the territorial dynamics of habitability that start from a different relationship with the extant. The discussion moves from the considerations developed by the research unit of Roma Tre University for the Italy pavilion "Resilient Communities" in the 2021 Architecture Biennale of Venice. It thus presents the characteristics of resilience emerging through forms of adaptation and risk mitigation based on collective initiatives of heritage reuse.
