Road network resilience

The relational components and their role in disaster risk reduction

Keywords: network resilience, street networks, specified resilience, resilience indices, configurational analysis

Abstract

This contribution discusses the components of network resilience and its role in reducing the risk of disasters through two paradigmatic examples in the Italian landscape. Rather than focussing solely on the physical consistency of the elements of the urban road network, the study evidences the need to understand better their relational qualities, which determine the functioning of the urban system locally and globally, to stimulate sustainable recovery in fragile territories.
