A strategic design perspective towards alternative futures for sustainability

Abstract

Today's world is increasingly confronted with fundamental tensions, characterised by challenges involving multiple levels and domains in its march towards sustainability. These tensions induce changes in human beings on various dimensions: mindsets, attitudes, actions, and prevailing cognitive models, leading to a paradigm shift in the existing worldview. Today's worldview, which focuses on economic growth and the pursuit of socio-cultural wealth, is challenged by the increasing decline of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems and the reduction of biodiversity, as well as by the scale and urgency of the actions needed to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
