Abstract
The highest expression of a stratigraphic type of masonry technique, with an exaltation of the values of surface and wall covering, is linked precisely to the Roman experience on which leading figures made fundamental interpretative contributions to European artistic and architectural culture, such as Semper, Bötticher, Riegl, Choisy, Meurer, Bettini and others.
