Inhabiting the limit

humanitarian architecture as border infrastructure

Abstract

The paper explores the concept of "inhabiting the limit" in refugee camps, analysing their visual and spatial impact. Foucault and Agamben consider the camp a space of exception and the political exclusion of refugees. The camp's transformation from temporary to permanent is addressed, highlighting infrastructural violence and discussing the role of infrastructure in space. The analysis highlights the lack of effective design in reception spaces, emphasising the need to consider social and psychological needs. It highlights the ambiguity between care and control in border infrastructures, raising the question of humanitarian architecture.
