Piazza del Popolo in Reggio Calabria: from ide- ological place to proximity space

Abstract

This contribution discusses the socio-spatial transformation of Piazza del Popolo in Reggio Calabria, from the city's reconstruction after the 1908 earthquake to the present day. Starting from the analysis of the urban, functional and morphological configuration – originally ideological due to the presence of the Casa del Fascio building – new activities and spontaneous uses are identified, suggesting possible re-design trajectories that account for its vital role as a public space of proximity.
