Mutation in Graphic Design
The Influence of Gio Ponti
Abstract
Graphic design evolved considerably during the 20th century, partly due to technological innovations and partly due to the influence of modern art movements, which changed how visual communication was conceived. This transformation is closely linked to pioneering figures such as Gio Ponti, whose contribution is not limited to architecture and industrial design but also extends to graphic design, profoundly influencing its development and diffusion. Ponti represents an example of a total artist, capable of fusing various artistic disciplines and applying an integrated aesthetic vision to his designs. His work has inspired generations of designers, laying the foundations for the minimalist and functionalist trends characterising contemporary design. This article aims to explore the evolution of graphic design in the context of technological innovations and modernist art movements, highlighting the crucial role Gio Ponti played in this process and his legacy in the contemporary design landscape.
