A story of failure

The ceramics workshop at the Bauhaus

Keywords: Bauhaus, Ceramics, Craftsmanship, Industrial production, Formal experimentation

Abstract

The article offers a critical analysis of the history of the Bauhaus ceramics workshop, interpreting it as one of the most contradictory aspects of the German school’s educational project. Through a historical reconstruction of its origins, its move to Dornburg, and the key figures involved — including Gerhard Marcks, Max Krehan, Theodor Bogler, Otto Lindig, and Marguerite Friedländer — the article highlights the conflict between artistic experimentation, traditional craftsmanship, and the aspiration towards industrial production promoted by Walter Gropius. The study shows how the ceramics workshop never managed to integrate fully with the industrial processes envisaged by the school’s management, maintaining instead a strong formal and design autonomy. At the same time, the text explores the technical and compositional research developed in the workshop, from Marcks’s plastic experiments to Bogler’s modular innovations, highlighting ceramics as an autonomous field of research that is difficult to reconcile with the principles of modern functionalism. Through a critical analysis of the school's internal dynamics and the subsequent biographical trajectories of its key figures, the article interprets Dornburg’s workshop as an experience suspended between communal utopia, artistic research, and ideological tensions, whose apparent failure is now fundamental to understanding the cultural and design ambiguities of the Bauhaus.
