Geological landscapes
From the quarries of Favignana to the cinti and caves of Val Basento
Abstract
This paper explores stone as an active material agent in contemporary design, moving beyond a purely functional interpretation to view it as a narrative, ecosystemic and perceptual device. Stone, both natural and ‘artificial’, is understood as cultural geology and as ecological infrastructure. The in-depth analysis of the stereotomy of the quarries in Favignana and the composition of the rock faces and caves in the Val Basento demonstrates how the design of the cut and the void becomes a tool for landscape design. The resulting hybrid stone forms open up scenarios in which conscious material choices shape identity, sustainability and well-being.
