Abstract

The landscape to the north is that of the Calvana and Monteferrato woods. These pre- Apennine formations characterise the valley of the Bisenzio, the city’s river and the source of its agricultural and industrial economy from the 19th century. At the end of the valley is the agricultural plain furrowed by a canal system, the “gore”, which exploits the land’s natural slope in a north-south direction and extends for over 50 km.
