Abstract

Today’s hospitals have to address our era’s major changes, sometimes without even realizing it. We can delineate these changes very briefly as:

– the revolution in medical and scientific knowl- edge of the post-genomic era and that of molecular and systems medicine;
– the revolution in biomedical technologies;
– the revolution in information and communication technology;
– the revolution in ethics and in humanization. Hospitals need to respond to the demand for care from a society that is increasingly vital and dynamic. Thanks to the extraordinary achievements of medicine, our society is not willing to be stopped even by the most serious illnesses.
