Life quality

Hospital Quirón Barcelona

  • Guido Incerti

Abstract

Located in an outlying urban area of the city of Barcelona, between Plaza Alfonso Comin and Ronda de Dalt, in the Gracia neighbourhood, the Quirón clinic is part of a more extensive healthcare complex, Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili.

Designed by the Pinearq architectural practice, founded by Albert de Pineda, which has earned an international reputation for the high quality of its hospital designs, this clinic’s architecture responds to the contemporary need to see even hospitals as realms of ‘wellness’, places where quality of life is perhaps more important than mere survival. The concept of ‘health’ was defined by the WHO (World Health Organization) in 1949 as «A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity». In its pursuit of this idea, the Quirón clinic is quite unique.
