A project for the Apuan Alps’ hospitals

Abstract

AND In this project for four hospitals in Tuscany, we found it a fascinating idea to separate the hospital part from the reception part.

Mario Cucinella This design came out of a layout conceived by Umberto Veronesi for a model hospital. His thinking was based on the fact that single block or high rise hospitals, in terms of infrastructure, were inadequate in their relationship with the city.

Its lack of connection to the context results from a missed opportunity for urban improvement. In the 19th century and early 20th century, for example, this opportunity was taken, designing pavilions connected to parks that also served a therapeutic purpose. This relationship was gradually weakened as hospitals grew in size. It goes without saying that a 50,000 sqm, 400 bed structure has major impact on the local area.
