On a human scale

Studio Altieri & Emilio Ambasz, New Ospedale dell’Angelo in Mestre

Abstract

The Hospital in Mestre was chosen to take part in the World Architecture Festival in Barcelona. It is one of the first Italian hospitals to actualize the model of a hospital conceived as a therapeutic community on a human scale, based on the specific needs of patients, sensitive to the idea of humanizing hospital spaces.

It went even further than that, seeking to establish a meaningful relationship with the landscape of the hospital’s setting. There was good reason behind the architectural design Studio Altieri’s choice of Emilio Ambasz as an artistic consultant.

The hospital is set in a still intact rural area, with a park to the west and the Alps to the north. The hos- pital was added to this context without any trauma to it, as it was designed to form a dialogue between architecture and nature.
